Bridging recipes, rules, and real‑world shooting
As Fujifilm users, we have a wealth of tutorials, recipes, and technical rundowns available to help us get the best shots. But, in my own photography journey with the Fujifilm X-T30ii , I found that if you’re shooting JPEG, the familiar pieces of digital photography wisdom: "expose to the right, lift shadows in post, protect your highlights at all costs” don't always apply in the same way. This guide aims to bridge that gap: to help you move beyond Fujifilm recipes and rules toward a deeper understanding of how to shoot in JPEG, so you can adapt confidently to real-world conditions.
In this guide, I’ll show you:
- What settings to use to shoot beautiful SOOC JPEGS
- An understanding of why we’re using those settings
- How to experiment more freely, respond intuitively to light, and get more consistent, satisfying results with those Fujifilm colors that make their cameras so beloved.
Prerequisite Knowledge
I’m not going to explain the basics — there are fantastic videos and write‑ups that already cover these areas in depth. But to get the most out of this guide, you’ll want to be comfortable with:
- Highlight warnings (blinkies)
- The exposure triangle
- Common exposure challenges
- Assigning settings to quick menu buttons
Understanding the Dynamic Range setting in Recipes
Digital photography wisdom most often tells us to expose to the right and avoid clipping highlights at all costs. The logic is simple: capture as much information as possible and fix the rest later in post. Fuji recipes tend to take a different approach because they’re built for shooting JPEGs with a specific look already baked in, not RAW files meant to be heavily edited. Since there’s much less room to recover tones afterward, it’s more important to nail your exposure and color balance in the moment rather than relying on recovery afterward.

That’s where Fujifilm’s Dynamic Range (DR) settings come in. These modes let the camera preserve more highlight information directly in the JPEG file by underexposing and then brightening midtones and shadows during processing. The higher the DR setting, the more aggressively the camera manages highlights — helping you retain detail in bright areas like skies or reflective surfaces while maintaining usable contrast.
- DR100%: This is the baseline. The camera exposes normally and doesn’t apply any tone curve adjustments. You get the most natural contrast, but highlights can blow out more easily in high‑contrast scenes.
- DR200%: The camera captures the image one stop darker than your metered exposure, then brightens the midtones and shadows in processing. This protects highlights in bright areas while still keeping the image balanced. You’ll need to shoot at ISO 400 or higher for this mode.
- DR400%:The sensor underexposes by about two stops, then lifts midtones and shadows more aggressively. This gives you maximum highlight protection and a flatter starting point, useful for midday light or extreme contrast. Minimum ISO here is 800.
Many Fujifilm recipes default to DR400% as it offers the most flexibility when shooting JPEGs straight out of camera. This keeps highlights under control and ensures and is essentially a safeguard against harsh light, preserving detail first, while allowing you to push your exposure higher and lean into that "filmic" look.
The trade‑off is that when you’re shooting in softer or lower‑contrast light, say an overcast day, shade, or indoors, that same DR 400% setting can flatten the image. You end up losing depth and punch because the camera is compressing tones that didn’t need compressing in the first place.
Changing Your Dynamic Range setting based on light and scene
Despite Fujifilm Recipes specifying a dynamic range setting, I believe changing this setting based on the lighting you're shooting in can maximize the tonal qualities of your photography. To do so, my recommendation is to assign Dynamic Range to a shortcut and adjust it as you shoot.
Experiment with 100% or 200% in gentler light for richer contrast, and return to 400% when working in bright, contrasty scenes. With a little practice, you’ll start to feel how each step affects your tones — and you’ll shoot with intention rather than defaulting to protection.
You might also come across DR Priority, which automates some of this behavior. It can be a useful tool but only goes up to 200%, which means you lose the control and flexibility available with the manual DR setting.
These concepts in action
A 400% Dynamic Range use case
Here you can see a mediocre photo I took in very sunny Santa Barbara, CA, but a great example of a high-contrast scene. From the histogram, you can see that I'm packing a lot of information in from the shadows to the highlights.



400% works great here as it prevents those highlights from clipping, while allowing me to retain detail in my shadows. You can see however, when 100% is applied, we start to lose detail and clip highlights where the light hits the building. Not the end of the world, but easily avoided. Here you can see 200% is also just clipping.
A 100% use case
Now we're looking at another photo, this time on a much cloudier, overcast day in Santa Barbara. With 400% applied, what's an already flat image feels even more so. The effect is sometimes subtle, but in these instances I like to set DR to 100%. As you can see below, this lifts the highlights slightly, and gives more contrast between the sky, hills, and sand.


Adjusting highlights and shadows to push and pull contrast
In the same way you can adjust your dynamic range , you can also shape the highlight and shadow settings within a recipe. These controls let you push or pull contrast directly in‑camera, recovering a bit more detail in bright or dark areas, or intentionally letting them clip for a punchier, stylized look.
Not every photo needs perfectly balanced tones. There are plenty of times when you’ll want to embrace deep shadow — when a silhouette adds mood, when side‑light gives texture, or when you simply want to lead the viewer’s eye toward the bright parts of a frame. Contrast can be a creative tool, not a flaw to fix. Getting comfortable with this helps you stop fighting your light and start using it to tell your story.
Rather than changing these settings on the fly, try creating a few variants of your favorite recipe. For example, build one tuned for low‑contrast scenes with added bite, another middle‑ground version for everyday shooting, and a flatter version for harsh midday light.
Will these tweaks affect the look and feel of the recipe?
A bit, yes. In some cases, that’s part of the fun, but it’s worth noting that some recipes are intentionally designed to be flatter or more subdued for a particular aesthetic, for example Vibrant Arizona by Fuji X Weekly. Adjusting the contrast can shift that look entirely.
Recipes shouldn’t be treated as sacred but as starting points. As you get more familiar with your camera, you’ll find it’s often the contrast settings that you’ll end up engaging with most. The key is understanding what each adjustment is doing so you can make those changes deliberately instead of guessing.
Creating recipes variations for different conditions
Here are some examples of adjusting your highlights and shadows for recipes, and explanation on how they help in certain situations. Except for the highlights, shadows, and dynamic range, the recipes remain unchanged to retain the same look and feel, but will retain better control in different conditions.



Let's look at the "Chad's" shot again. Our first image shows a Pro Neg Hi recipe tuned for sunny, daytime conditions with negative highlights and shadows as well as 400% DR - this keeps the image well balanced. When we look at the next image, intended for flatter less sunny weather, we can see that are highlights, and shadows have been increase, while dropping the DR to 100%. Here this doesn't quite work - our palm trees are distractingly dark, and there's a lot of glare from the cars. And just like before DR 100% hasn't quite worked, even when the exposure is knocked down in the third image.
If we now look at a flatter scene, we can see how the recipe with baked in contrast really helps lift our image (image 1) and make it feel less lifeless compared to when we apply a flatter recipe intended for sunny conditions (image 2).


Defying Conventional Digital Wisdom
Even with DR priority properly engaged, you’ll sometimes find yourself at a crossroads: you’ve underexposed to protect highlights, but your shadows are completely crushed and that wasn't your intent. Traditional digital advice would tell you to either accept it or miss the shot altogether, and the internet is full of photographers who treat clipping highlights like a moral failure.
Here’s the truth: sometimes you should clip your highlights.
The same goes for shadows. Not every corner of your image needs to show detail, and sometimes letting them drift into black is what gives a shot depth and atmosphere. Shadows are just as much a creative decision as highlights, so treat them that way.

How you should actually shoot SOOC JPEGs on your Fujifilm:
Expose for your subject
If that means losing some detail in a cloud or a patch of light through branches, that’s perfectly fine. Photography is an art, not a science — and your subject, not your histogram, should guide your decisions.
This isn’t revolutionary advice, but it often gets buried under an obsession with data and “perfect” histograms. In practice, shooting SOOC JPEGs has more in common with film photography than digital RAW work. Film photographers often expose for their subject because shadows are precious and highlights tend to soften and roll off nicely. The same philosophy applies here: focus on your subject and your story first.
Of course, you might look at your photo and think, “But my highlights are blown — isn’t that bad?” Sometimes yes, but often not. Ask yourself: does that blown-out spot matter to your composition, your intent, your story? If not, let it go. And if you just can’t stand losing that detail… just have JPEG and RAW set to “on.” That way, you can edit the raw files of the photos that you had to retain as much detail as possible in. There's no shame in that either!
Editing in Post
Editing JPEGs in post can be a challenge. Aggressive adjustments often introduce artifacts since much of the look is already baked into the file. That said, post‑processing is still valuable for small refinements and for bypassing certain in‑camera processes that aren’t always optimal.
For example, I like to add clarity in post instead of in‑camera. The reason? Adding clarity in camera can slow down performance. You’ve probably noticed the slight pause after taking a shot while the camera processes it. Doing it later keeps shooting snappier. I'd try somewhere from -5 to -20 for a softer look.
I also prefer to fine‑tune grain afterward. Fuji’s built‑in grain settings are good, but they can sometimes feel a bit heavy‑handed. Adjusting grain in post gives more subtle control over texture and mood.
If part of the reason you shoot JPEGs is to avoid paying for expensive editing software, Lightroom Mobile has a free version that handles these basics really well. Tools like clarity, grain, and cropping are all you really need to give your JPEGs that finishing polish without drifting too far from the Fuji look you crafted in camera. The Fujifilm X App is worth having on your phone, though for a different reason. It won't edit your files. What it does well for a JPEG workflow is pull images off the camera, so you can get them into Lightroom Mobile without a cable or a card reader.
If you do end up shooting RAW+JPEG as a safety net, X RAW Studio is the other tool worth knowing about. It's a free desktop app that connects your camera over USB and uses the camera's own processor to reprocess RAF files, which means you get the same film simulations, DR settings, and highlight and shadow curves you'd get in camera, just with a larger preview and real-time feedback as you adjust. It's the closest thing to a second attempt at your recipe without leaving the Fuji rendering behind. The catch is that the camera has to be plugged in, and it will only process files shot on that same model.
Recipes as a starting position
Shooting SOOC JPEGs isn't about finding a perfect recipe and never touching it again. It's about knowing which handful of controls actually respond to the light in front of you, and being willing to move them.
The short version of everything above:
- Assign Dynamic Range to a Q menu slot or function button. It's the setting you'll reach for most often.
- Default to DR400% in hard, contrasty light, and drop to 100% when the scene is already flat.
- Keep two or three variants of your favorite recipe: one with added bite for dull days, one neutral, one flatter for midday sun.
- Expose for your subject, then ask whether the clipping you actually got matters to the photo.
- Leave clarity and grain for post, where you get finer control and the camera stays responsive.
None of this makes recipes less useful. It moves them from being set-in-stone formulas to being a starting position you can adapt from. The better you understand what each setting is doing to your tones, the less time you'll spend looking at the back of the camera wondering why the shot doesn't match the one you saw in your head.
